The Federated Supreme Student Council (FSSC) for the year 2023-2025 together with the elected officers of the Local Supreme Student Councils (LSSCs) from different campuses of Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) had their oath-taking ceremony with Dr. Mario R. Briones, University President, held at the CHMT Function Hall, LSPU Sta. Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC), Nov. 28.
“Always be selfless in putting the interest of the studentry and your collective welfare in making decisions,” President Briones advised the newly elected officers. “Be accountable and trustworthy.”
He emphasized that the student-leaders from the different campuses had taken on the responsibility of serving the student body, especially one of them who will be representing the students in the board.
“One among you, the elected president, sits as [the] Student Regent in the Board of Regents, the governing board of the university,” stated Dr. Briones, who also acts as the Vice-Chair of the LSPU Board of Regents (BOR).
Dr. Michelle B. Sarmiento, Executive Assistant and Adviser of the FSSC, reminded the new breed of leaders of the importance of the ceremony for what it signifies.
“Please remember that this is just not an event to officially declare you as the winners of the election,” Dr. Sarmiento said, “but more of a reminder of your promise to be of service to the students.”
She added: “When you pledge to be of service, you are to do what you are supposed to do for the greater good ‘despite of’ and ‘in spite of.’ The call for leadership is [not only] doing what is right and just but also taking into consideration many other things. You should be able to learn to balance reason and compassion.”
Christian P. San Luis, Chairperson of the Student Affairs and Services (LSPU-SCC), enumerated in an interview the scope of the duties and responsibilities of the FSSC and LSCC, which includes advocating the interest the students, facilitating communication between the students and administration, providing leadership among student organizations, organizing events for holistic student experience, and influencing policies and decisions concerning the students.
Louis Laine Padua, newly elected president of FSSC, also shared in an interview that she is grateful and honored to be the president of the FSSC. She said that although this responsibility is not easy, she is optimistically looking forward to this amazing journey.
Engr. Beltran P. Pedrigal, Vice President for Administration and OIC-Campus Director; OSAS Chairpersons; SSC Advisers; OSAS Services unit heads; and LSPU Local and Federated COMELEC were also present on the said activity.
