CHMT hosts Pre-internship Seminar and Orientation, preps students for industry exposure

Fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (BSTM) and Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) students from Laguna State Polytechnic University-Los Baños Campus (LSPU-LBC), along with their parents and industry partners, gathered for a Pre-Internship Seminar and Orientation organized by the College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) at the Lacson Gymnasium, Feb. 11.

This event aimed to guide participants on the On-the-Job Training (OJT) program and internship opportunities. It also raised awareness about workplace harassment, professional grooming, and workplace etiquette, ensuring that students are prepared for their transition into the professional world.

In her welcome remarks, Ms. Aprilyn Etorma, CHMT Associate Dean, highlighted workplace harassment as a critical issue, emphasizing the need for a safe, respectful, and inclusive work environment, especially within the hospitality and tourism sectors.

The morning session featured Dr. Jann Arlie P. Agawin from the LSPU College of Teacher Education (CTE), who discussed various forms of workplace harassment and the legal measures to address them.

In the afternoon, an OJT orientation was held for students and their parents.

Ms. Dian Guia, CHMT faculty member, provided an overview of the program, explaining the two OJT phases: the 300-hour In-House Training Program, which helps students gain essential industry skills before deployment, and the 400-hour Off-Campus Placement, which offers experiential learning.

Meanwhile, Ms. Hazel Maree B. Juanillas, BSHM Program Coordinator, outlined the practicum policies and requirements, including resumes, parental consent forms, and medical clearances.

To align industry expectations with the participants, representatives from 2GO Travel & Tours and the Philippine Training Center (PTC) discussed their respective internship programs.

Ms. Leigh Nicole B. Apostol from 2GO Travel & Tours presented available internship roles, while Ms. Arlyn Caballero of PTC introduced the Flight Attendant Operational Program (FAOP), which includes a 15-day intensive training course for aspiring airline professionals.

This event reinforced the university’s commitment to producing industry-ready professionals in hospitality and tourism by providing quality academic training, professional guidance, and opportunities for real-world experience.

This initiative is aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 4: Quality Education; SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth; and SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals.
