University President visits Batanes

Dr. Nestor M. De Vera together with five University officials visited Batanes, the northern most frontier of the Philippines, last February 18 – 20, 2015 for several purposes, to attend the Philippine Science Consortium First Quarter Meeting and Action Planning Workshop, benchmarking of Batanes State College and benchmarking of Batanes province with regards to disaster risk reduction and management.

Hosting the Third PSC National Faculty and Student Research Congress provided a significant advantage and mileage for Laguna State Polytechnic University being one of its youngest members. Through the success of this research conclave followed by the University’s top five showing at the quiz bowl as well as its continuous presence in PSC activities, Dr. Nestor De Vera is selected as the first chairperson for the PSC Committee on Faculty Development. The Action Plan of the Committee was presented by A/Prof. Rommel Octavius R. Nuestro, VPRD and PSC Coordinator during the workshop plenary session and in the Joint Council and Secretariat Meeting.

Benchmarking of the Batanes State College and of Batanes province with regards to disaster risk reduction and management was also done by the delegation. This was done through observation and visits to various towns of the province. Highlights of the benchmark visit included those of documentation of possible design/s for rescue boats, visit to PAGASA station as reference to the University meteorological activities, and visit to Mahatao Port as benchmark to proposed LSPU Los Baños breakwater facilities.
