      The BSAE Program

      The OBE Adoption Process

In accordance with CMO 37 s. 2012, the BSAE Program adopted the OBE Curriculum following these stages:

      1.  Attendance to trainings and workshops

      2. Change of syllabus format

      3. Adoption of new PEOs and Pos.

      4. Presentation of PEOs and POs to stakeholders for comments and suggestions

      5. Formation if the Program Advisory Panel

      6. Preparation of the BSAE Program Assessment and CQI Manual

      7. Conduct of assessment and evaluation of student performance, CILOs and POs.

      8. PEOs are slated for assessment and evaluation in 2018.

      The OBE Framework

To ensure high quality instruction, the BSAE curriculum is based on the cyclic OBE framework (Fig. 1) with the following series of events: planning, implementation, assessment and evaluation, and improvements.

Planning consists of conceptualization and formulation.  Vital inputs for the planning phase were the emerging needs of the community and industry, new technological developments, related laws and government impositions, PSAE and PRC requirements, and LSPU vision, mission and strategic plans.  These inputs were used to determine the desired attributes of the graduates.  Different levels of outcomes (institutional, program and student) are formulated.

Course plan and delivery systems are then devised for implementation. Teaching methods, learning activities and assessment tools were aligned to the outcomes.  The plan is then implemented.

Each outcomes level then goes through assessment and evaluation process to determine the success of OBE curriculum and its implementation.  The results of evaluation are summarized and used as input for the improvement of the curriculum.

The cycle is now completed, and a new one is started following the same pattern of activities.

      BSAE Mission, PEOs and POs

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) is an educational philosophy where the teaching and learning approach is based upon a predetermined set of expected outcomes.  In this context, outcomes refers to values or attributes that students should acquire.  Outcomes are the knowledge and skills students should be able to develop.

BSAE Mission.  IAE is committed to achieve excellence by (a) training individuals as professionals equipped with knowledge and skills in Agricultural Engineering technology, and (b) providing services to seek solutions to problems related to agriculture, forestry and fishery in order to attain sustainable food, feed and fiber, bioenergy, environment and natural resources.

Programmes Educational Objectives (PEOs) describe the expected achievements of graduates in their career and professional life.   It is expected that three to five years after graduation, the graduates of the BSAE program are:

      1. Licensed agricultural engineers engaged in teaching agricultural engineering and other related courses in HEIs, consultation, inspection, testing and evaluation, investigation and management services on agricultural technologies, facilities and equipment and other related fields.

      2. Entrepreneurs or holding managerial or supervisory positions in public or private institutions involved in agricultural and other related fields in local and international endeavors.

      3. Involved in research and development, training and extension work, and consultancy services, either as an individual or part of multi-disciplinary team, on agricultural engineering facilities, services, processes, systems and technologies for sustainable production and post-production of safe water, food, feed and fiber, bioenergy, environment and natural resources.

      4. Licensed professionals pursuing advance studies, participating in life-long learning processes and keeping abreast to technology trends for continuing personal and professional development.

Program outcomes (POs) describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. They relate to the skills, knowledge, and behaviors that students attain as they progress through the program.

Upon graduation, the graduates of the BSAE program have the ability to

      a. apply knowledge of mathematics and science to solve engineering problems

      b. design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data

      c. design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability, in accordance with standards

      d. function on multidisciplinary teams

      e. identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems

      f. understand professional and ethical responsibility

      g. communicate effectively

      h. understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context

      i. recognize the need for, and engage in life-long learning

      j. know contemporary issues

      k. use techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice

      l. Know and understand engineering and management principles as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments
