The College of Teacher Education (CTE) of the Laguna State Polytechnic University-San Pablo City Campus (LSPU-SPCC), through the collaborative effort of student organizations, launched the project “Books by the Stairway (BBS): Give a Book, Get a Book,” March 15.
The BBS project encourages responsible book consumption and recreational reading among the students, faculty, and staff of the university. It follows the “give-a-book-get-a-book” framework wherein any reader may take a book of choice from the BBS shelf and donate books in return. This is enabled by having a bookshelf by the stairs (i.e., landing area in-between stairs) accessible and open to all readers who wish to donate and/or take books of their preference.
The Society of Inclusive and Keen Leaders for Active Volunteerism (SIKLAV) under the guidance of Ms. Cyrell Ate, spearheaded the project with the active involvement of the LSPU Senior High School Student Council (SHS-SC), English Wizards League, Social Studies Society (SSS), and CTE Student Council.
This collaborative project is modeled after the concept of “Sharing Economy” described as “a peer-to-peer based activity of acquiring, providing, or sharing access to goods and services” (The Investopedia Team, 2020) vis-à-vis the concept of “green giving” through environmental-conscious donation drive for responsible consumption (SDG 12: Responsible Production and Consumption) and quality education (SDG 4: Quality Education), thus, positioning the university as a Sustainable Book-Sharing Community.
What makes this project unique is its location by the stairs (hence, its name “books by the stairway”). Specifically, the BBS is situated at the landing area connecting the middle wing stairs (first to second floor) of the CTE building of the LSPU-SPCC. The BBS project adds value to an unrealized structural area by turning it into an inclusive space for recreational reading and informal learning.
After the short program conducted at the CTE Function Hall, the attendees visited the project site at the stairway adjacent to the said hall. The project launching coincided with the celebration of CTE Week.
