Twenty-one Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (BSTM) students and three College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) faculty of the Laguna State Polytechnic University-Los Baños Campus served as the first batch of trainees of the Cultural Community Tour Guiding program of the Department of Tourism (DOT) Calabarzon held at the LSPU-LBC Board Room, May 31.
“This is a pioneer effort in CALABARZON as this is the first time we are training students under this program,” DOT CALABARZON Tourism Operations Officer Mr. Lester Uriarte stressed.
Cultural Community Tour Guiding is a community engagement effort of DOT originally structured for local communities to provide livelihood opportunities and enhance resource capability for tourism.
Initiated by the LSPU-LBC CHMT headed by Associate Dean Aprilyn E. Etorma, the said activity equipped the students with knowledge and skills in assisting, facilitating, entertaining, and guiding the tourists.
Ms. Lorna Binaohan-Marollano, Community Tour Guide Trainer for Region 4A and former President of the Multi-lingual Accredited Tour Guides Association of the Philippines (MULATGAP), provided valuable insights on how to be an effective tour guide recognizing cultural differences of audience. She also shared tips on content creation, delivery, and building rapport with tourists.
The training comprised lectures, written and practical exercises, and a mock tour for experiential learning. During the activity, students practiced guiding with Laguna’s tourist attractions as their subjects, receiving constructive feedback from Ms. Binaohan-Marollano.
This intervention ultimately aimed to prepare students for real-world tour guiding experiences, thereby contributing to the enhancement of tourism in the region.###
