Home/ News & Articles/ An Improved R&D in Fisheries through LSPU-PCAARRD Partnership
Since its establishment in early 2014 as the Science Laboratory Annex Building of the College of Fisheries (COF), the Science Research Laboratory (SRL) of the Laguna State Polytechnic University Los Baños Campus (LSPU-LBC) is continually growing through expansion of its facilities and scope in research aspects. This was made possible by the proactive support from the University President, Dr. Nestor M. De Vera, the LSPU-LBC Campus Director, Dr. Daniel D. Bunal, the Director of Research and Development Services, Dr. Christian Paul P. De La Cruz, and from the internal and external funding agencies.
The establishment of SRL’s Microbiology and Molecular Biology Laboratory Units was realized through the ongoing externally funded research project of LSPU with Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) entitled, “Development and Application of Synbiotic-Enriched Fish Feeds for Improved Production Performance of Milkfish towards Sustainable Aquaculture and Food Security,” which started off in July 2016, with Dr. de la Cruz as the Project Leader.
Another project entitled, Improvement of the Research Station for Fisheries Biotechnology and Post-Harvest Technology of Laguna State Polytechnic University Los Baños Campus through PCAARD’s Institutional Development Division which was secured in 2017 with an additional funding from Department of Science and Technology. This was used in rehabilitation and upgrading of fishponds and concrete tanks and purchase of additional laboratory equipment, in support of the ongoing activities related to the milkfish project. LSPU-LBC also allotted financial assistance as counterpart-fund which was expended on repairs and improvement of laboratory rooms, and purchase of furniture. Through this, SRL’s officials’ offices and laboratory divisions i.e., Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, Microbiology Laboratory, Molecular Biology Laboratory and Preparation Room were constructed. Instruments such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) System and UV-Vis Spectrophotometer for analytical laboratory, Gel Documentation system and other necessary units for molecular biology laboratory were procured.
Another externally funded research project entitled “Heavy Metal Contamination in Agricultural Soils and Crops and its Implication to Farm Management and Food Safety and Security” headed by Dr. de la Cruz was approved by National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) and implemented last May 1, 2018 . Preparations and analyses for this project will be conducted in the SRL. Relatively, RDS has approved twenty-six (26) research proposals of LSPU-LBC’s faculty members that have undergone technical review and have been recommended by R&D experts from the UPLB and PCAARRD.
