A Narrative Report on the Seminar on Qualitative Research in Psychology held at Laguna State Polytechnic University, Siniloan Campus on November 16, 2018.

The Seminar on Qualitative Research in Psychology was initiated by Zeryl Joy M. Fiscal, the associate dean of CAS; Dr. Digna dR. Fernandez, the former Research and Implementing Unit head; and the newly appointed RIU head, Dan Azriel N. San Agustin. They came up with a seminar to empower the psychology students to conduct qualitative research that is aligned with the vision of the university.

Before the program started, the participants registered their names on the attendance sheet headed by Mrs. Anna Cheryl Yu, the committee for registration. While the faculty and students were waiting for the resource speaker, the Vice President for Research and Development, Dr. Corazon N. San Agustin delivered already her message because she needed to go to LSPU Sta. Cruz for the Training and Workshop in Extension Program which was also organized by the Research and Development office. In her speech, the VP said that the CAS will continue what they have started. She also announced some of the activities of the research and development office for this school year 20182019. Some of these activities are Faculty research training and workshop which will be held in Los Bańos Campus, Workshop on Publishable Papers for those who will be conducting qualitative research and Research Mentorship for New Faculty. The VP said that it will serve as professional development when the new faculty members are get engaged to research. Another, the VP for research and development motivated the students to participate in international research since their research is a core funded research. It means that 70% from their expenses will be coming from the university and 30% will be coming from the researcher. She also said that each job order in the office of the Research and development has partnership with the instructor who is conducting a research. In short, they are proud to say that they are contributory of the different researches in the province of Laguna.

After the message of Dr. San Agustin, the resource speaker already arrived in the venue so the program officially started at nine o’clock in the morning with invocation and national anthem through an audiovideo presentation. Then, the Research Implementing Unit Head, Dan Azriel N. San Agustin delivered the rationale for the seminar. He said that it is their desire to empower students with regard to research. Another, through research, students could stimulate research by collaborations and now they could target the trend on qualitative research. After the speech of the RIU, the associate dean of CAS, Zeryl Joy M. Fiscal introduced the Resource Speaker, Dr. John Manuel R. Kliatchko, a professor at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila. Dr. Gregorio is a registered psychologist, a member of American p s y c h o l o g i c a l Association, a consultant of People Dynamic in Pasig City and a veteran lecturer.  

When the associate dean mentioned the name of the resource speaker, all faculty and students rose from their seats. At the beginning of his speech, he said that he is always a lecturer for a minimum of 300 people. His lecture was about the steps on how to make a case study since it is a type of qualitative research. First is establishing of research topic which is the most possible for the researcher in terms of relevance of the topic. Therefore, he presented three topics and one of these was sorority. Next, the particular method used was qualitative research since the researcher perceived that this topic was better addressed using a more “in-depth” approach.  In-depth interview means analyzing the first interview first before going to the next interview by asking the same questions. He also said that qualitative research is concerned to “why” not “what” since the respondents are more engaged to an in-depth interview. Another, he also showed a sample of case study on unwanted pregnancy in Africa because the teenage pregnancy in Africa has a negative effect to their family so they keep it. He also compared the two types of research, the qualitative and the quantitative research. Quantitative research is not a narration of story instead it is only a short discussion of a topic. Moreover, Dr. Kliatchko said that if there is no enough information, why researchers should focus on that topic. He mentioned the term “triangulating” which means that the information is not only coming from one source. He also quoted that in qualitative analysis of data, researchers should transcribe it by asking permission to the respondents since case study focuses on experiential k n o w l e d g e .  

To make the discussion more informative, Dr. Kliatchko mentioned the five important requirements of Qualitative Case Study such as issue choice, triangulation, e x p e r i e n t i a l knowledge, contexts and activities. Then he also talked about the sources of evidence such as documentation, archival records, interviews, direct o b s e r v a t i o n , p a r t i c i p a n t observation and physical artifacts. Documentation is a printed material which is retrievable but difficult to find. Another, archival records are the same with documentation but bias because it is influenced by subjective perception. Third, direct observation occurs when the person observed knows that he/she is observed. Fourth, participant observation is the same with direct observation since it is artificial. Lastly, physical artifacts are insightful into cultural features but are selectivity and availability.  

Dr. Kliatchko did not only discuss the aforementioned information but also the types of case study methodologies like exploratory, d e s c r i p t i v e , explanatory/casual. Explanatory has rich data-gathering possibilities and unit analysis is consisted of rich materials that the researcher will explore to gain more or new insights. Next, descriptive talk about social phenomenon that is not understood while explanatory or casual follows hypothesis or tests hypothesis using the data that the researcher observed. In short, exploratory and descriptive are somewhat the same while exploratory or casual is highly different to the first two case methodologies.  

There was a lot of information put into the mind of the participants since each word uttered by the speaker was meaningful so each of them listened very well to his lecture like what the undersigned did when he was discussing his lecture. After his speech, Dr. Kliatchko, was given tokens and certificate of appreciation for making himself available on that day since the resource speaker is a busy professor in UST. Then it was followed by open forum headed by the emcee, Joseph Aldrin Ganibo. Dr. Rolando Cruzada Jr. asked the question, what should be his basis in selecting the case. Dr. Kliatchko said it really depends on the researcher on how he/she selects it. The researcher’s basis should be the literature that the respondent could not do it and based on the literature, it should have this. Another, it should answer a certain phenomenon and settle by looking a certain literature. In open forum, there was also a student who asked if it is possible not to include the conceptual framework in the research. Dr. Kliatchko answered it is optional and it depends on the adviser and research coordinator if they would like to include it or not.  The program was formally closed by Dr. Digna dR. Fernandez, a professor in CAS followed by a photo session of the Associate Dean, RIU head, faculty, psychology students and of course the resource speaker.    

In short, this seminar was not a typical day for the CAS faculty and psychology students instead a day for them to cherish or remember as they formulate a new case study for qualitative research.
