LSPU-SCC holds basic life support training for students, admin personnel

In its continuous effort to promote health and safety awareness, Laguna State Polytechnic University-Santa Cruz Campus (LSPU-SCC), through the initiatives of the University Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (UDRRMO), successfully conducted a two-day Basic Life Support Training at the Student Services Building (SSB) Function Hall, Sep. 16-17.

Attended by both students and administrative personnel, the event aimed to equip participants with essential life-saving skills.

Engr. Manuel Luis R. Alvarez, Campus Director of LSPU-SCC, emphasized the importance of the training in fostering a culture of preparedness and responsibility not only among students but also among employees.
“Kaya kayo nandito mga estudyante [is] to have new knowledge hindi lang ‘yung natututunan n’yo sa loob ng classroom kundi alam n’yo ‘yung gagawin in case magkaroon ng emergency,” Engr. Alvarez said.

The training covered vital topics such as standard first aid for first responders, proper folding of T-bandages, demonstrating semi-broad bandages, splinting, characteristics of a good first aider, recognizing musculoskeletal injuries, and responding to other emergency situations. Participants were given hands-on experience using simulation tools during practical exercises.

Mr. Joshua Vitaliz, Head of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO)-Santa Cruz Laguna, expressed his gratitude to LSPU for this initiative. He stressed that emergency preparedness measures like this should be a top priority and a main objective for LSPU-Santa Cruz, considering the large size of the campus.

At the end of the event, Mr. Erwin Napiza, Director of UDRRMO, highlighted that the training would help them establish a new Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT), which will be divided into three groups: responders, first aiders, and fire response. He also mentioned that more upcoming training, such as WASAR (Water Search and Rescue) and High Angle Rescue, are also on the way.

The training was facilitated by Ms. Pricilla Villanueva from MDRRMO-Santa Cruz and SFO1 Ruel Taladro from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Lumban, Laguna.
