LSPU inks commitment for 'access and success' of higher education

The Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) showed its support to the initiative of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) with the banner theme of “access and success” of higher education in the country.

Dr. Mario R. Briones, University President, signed the wall of commitment during the launching of the CHED initiative entitled “Paglaum Kag Pagdaug: Access and Success for Quality and Inclusive Higher Education” held at the CHED Auditorium, Feb. 12.

Dr. J. Prospero E. De Vera III, Chair of CHED, shared that this big initiative of the Commission for 2024 focuses on the concepts of access (admission) and success (completion) of higher education.

The CHED Chair pointed out the importance of examining the admission system of universities to make sure that the increasingly competitive admission system does not disadvantage certain sectors, such as “those who are less prepared to go to the university, those coming from public schools, those coming from rural areas, [and] the children of indigenous communities.”

He also shared that the project involves getting into the attrition rate and paying attention to those learners who “fall by the wayside and do not complete their education.”

The LSPU is a part of the initial batch of state universities and colleges (SUCs) that will be participating in this CHED initiative.

The research project entitled “Empowering Equity Target Students: Enhancing Access and Success in State Universities and Colleges across Regions I, VIII, and XII” was presented by the project leaders, namely, Dr. Keneth Bayani of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU), Dr. Sherrie Ann Cananua-Labid of the Samar State University (SSM), and Dr. Marcos Monderin of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM).

Chair De Vera also shared that the study will eventually provide evidence for the governing board to review university policies.
