Pretty in Pink: Introducing the Aesthetic and Delicious Mushroom of LSPU

When it comes to edible mushrooms, common to many are the ones that come in white. However, there are colorful alternatives, just like the pink addition at the Mushroom Research and Production Center (MRPC) of the Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU).

Pink Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus djamor) is a species of tropical mushroom with pink color ranging from vivid-pink to salmon-pink color. It is known for its taste commonly compared to bacon with a noticeable umami taste.

With a meaty texture and seafood taste, these pink mushrooms are a good substitute for meat products, making them a delicious and nutritious choice for those seeking a well-balanced diet.

Pink oyster mushrooms are endemic in tropical and subtropical areas. Compared to other oyster mushrooms, it requires less humidity and a cooler temperature.

LSPU-MRPC Project Head Charmyne V. Sanglay shared, “It is truly a dream come true… We delve into finding the kind of mushroom that grows best depending on the climate in Laguna.”

Located at the LSPU-Siniloan Campus, the LSPU-MRPC develops technology for the production of mushrooms that best thrive in tropical areas like Laguna and neighboring provinces.

Supported by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) and the Department of Science and Technology Region IV-A (DOST Calabarzon), the LSPU-MRPC aims to be the leading mushroom research and production center in the region through the use of research and innovation. At present, the center actively responds to the multifaceted areas of instruction, research, extension, and production.

The LSPU-MRPC has been one of the education tourism destinations of the University, with international and local academics and researchers visiting the facility to learn more about its technology and production services.
