LSPU braves food tech program re-inspection

The Laguna State Polytechnic University underwent the re-inspection and monitoring of the Bachelor of Science in Food Technology (BSFT) program of the College of Food Nutrition and Dietetics (CFND) by the Professional Regulation Board of Food Technology (PRB-FT), May 29-30.

This re-inspection aimed to assess the compliance of the university’s BSFT program with professional regulatory standards mandated by the Philippine Food Technology Act (RA No. 11052) and Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Memorandum Order No. 07, s. 2019, which outlines the policies, standards, and guidelines for BSFT.

Compliance with professional regulatory standards ensures the eligibility of LSPU BSFT graduates to take the licensure examination for food technology.

The PRB team indicated that recommendations for the LSPU-Los Baños Campus (LSPU-LBC) physico-chemical laboratory, microbiology laboratory, and sensory evaluation room/laboratory were met, and deficiencies in these areas were proposed to be marked as resolved. The renovation of the food processing laboratory is underway, and expected to be completed by 2025. LSPU-LBC was also advised to submit a list of product lines for their food processing facility based on available equipment, and faculty members were encouraged to take the upcoming licensure examination in August.

Meanwhile, LSPU-Siniloan Campus (LSPU-SC) was advised to share facilities with other campuses while setting up their permanent facilities. They were reminded that the proposed sensory evaluation laboratory shall be separate from the food preparation room and free from any distractions. The scaling up of baking facilities to a commercialization level was also recommended.

Atty. Rushid Jay S. Sancon, Campus Director of LSPU-LBC, acknowledged the activity as an opportunity for growth and improvement of the program, ensuring quality service to LSPU’s stakeholders.

“This is essential to make our programs relevant and responsive to the needs of the present time. Rest assured that the administration will continuously work to ensure that all requirements and standards of the PRC are met,” Atty. Sancon said.

Dr. Carmela Jhoy M. Dy, Dean of CFND, presented updates and corrective actions taken by LSPU-LBC based on the 2023 PRB-FT inspection. She discussed compliance with facilities and equipment and the hiring of additional faculty. Dr. Dy also mentioned initiatives such as benchmarking with the Institute of Food Science and Technology at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (ISFT-UPLB), which includes a laboratory tour, sharing of facilities, extension proposals, research commercialization, utilization of research output, and work immersion for BSFT students.

Similarly, LSPU-SC Program Coordinator Ms. Sheena Marie Marjolina presented actions taken by LSPU-SC based on the 2023 PRB-FT recommendations. Proposals for establishing microbiology, physico-chemical, sensory evaluation, and product development laboratories and hiring additional faculty members were submitted for approval. Ms. Marjolina also shared initiatives for research, extension, instruction, and proposed partnerships with other State Universities and Colleges (SUCs).

“We would like to close most of the deficiencies of your university. We would like you to reach compliance as soon as you can,” said PRB-FT Board Member Hon. Remedios V. Baclig.

The monitoring team was led by PRB-FT Chairperson Dr. Anthony C. Sales, PFT, CESO III, together with Board Member Hon. Remedios V. Baclig and Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) Regional Office IV-A representative Ms. Divinia C. Ramos. CFND Faculty Members Ms. Hazel Olive S. San Juan and Ms. Wellisa Cammayo from LSPU-LBC, and Ms. Sheryline Aguillera, Ms. Ronalaine Serrano, and Ms. Jennifer Ada from LSPU-SC also attended the activity. ###
