The College of Hospitality Management and Tourism (CHMT) graduating students of the Laguna State Polytechnic University-Los Baños Campus (LSPU-LBC) conducted a planting activity entitled: “Growing Futures Return and Renewing Nature through Graduation Planting” at the CHMT garden, May 31.
A total of 175 herbs, ornamental plants, and fruit-bearing trees from the Bureau of Plant Industries (BPI) were planted by the students.
Senate Bill 1538, known as the Graduation Legacy for the Environment Act of 2022, proposes that all public school graduating students must plant at least 10 trees as a prerequisite for graduation.
CHMT Associate Dean Aprilyn E. Etorma emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship among students, especially that LSPU-LBC is in a flood-prone area.
“Ipakita natin ang pagiging makabansa at makakalikasan natin… Hindi lang ito for the sake of requirement but most of all ay for the environment,” Dean Etorma reiterated.
Prior to the planting activity, Mr. Jonathan M. Castillo of BPI presented an instructional video on vermicomposting and demonstrated grafting techniques.
The students were divided into groups to perform various tasks, including tree planting, clean-up, seed germination, and setting up a greenhouse.
The said activity was organized by Third Year Section C Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Events Management (MICE) students under the guidance of Ms. Joella Nolasco.###
