As a response to the call for blood donors, the College Red Cross Youth of Laguna State Polytechnic University-San Pablo City Campus (CRCY LSPU-SPCC), in collaboration with the Philippine Red Cross - San Pablo City Chapter (PRC-SPCC), launched a bloodletting activity inside the university, Feb.10.

Held at SPCC's AVEC Hall, the Mass Mobile Blood Donation event was participated by students, faculty, and volunteers outside the institution.

In line with this, PRC-SPCC Chapter Administrator, Dorie P. Cabela, shared that the activity was an urgent response to the rise in blood-related needs of the patients.

"Narito tayo kasi alam naman natin there's a need for us to have a lot of blood kasi there are a lot of patients who need blood, kaya if somebody donates his/her blood, we know for the fact that somebody will be saved. Ang buhay nila ay madudugtungan," she said when asked what drove them to conduct the activity.

According to Lawrence A. Tubigan, the President of CRCY LSPU-SPCC, the primary goal of their organization in conducting this donation drive was to increase the supplies for the Red Cross’ blood bank.

“Layunin nito na makatulong tayo na magkaroon pa ng maraming dugo at mapunan ang Blood Bank ng Red Cross,” CRCY’s President said. Furthermore, he also stated that it was their long-time goal to conduct a donation drive like this.

“One of our main events po talaga ay bloodletting activity. Since nagkaroon the pandemic started, hindi po tayo nagkaroon ng chance para maipagpatuloy ito but since face-to-face na at mayroon po tayong capability and we started to plan it, and through the help of San Pablo City Chapter at Laguna Chapter, nagawa po namin yung bloodletting activity namin,” he added.

Moreover, he also shared that the blood donors underwent a briefing and several tests such as interviews, weight measurement, blood pressure, hemoglobin testing, and physical examination, to determine if they were qualified to donate blood.

Meanwhile, CRCY LSPU-SPCC Secretary Jamille Faith Francia said that the event would help fill the scarcity of blood supply in San Pablo City and other communities.

"Sobrang taas ng demand sa blood supply, so 'yung pagkakaroon natin ng bloodletting activity sa school ay napakalaking bagay at tulong, hindi lamang sa ating lungsod kundi pati na rin sa ibang pang komunidad na nangangailangan ng dugo," she explained.

"Naging smooth naman yung blood donation. Wala naman akong naramdamang hilo, takot at sakit. Masaya naman ako knowing na once we donate our blood, nakakatulong tayo sa mga nangangailangan ng dugo," Ian D. Guerra, a first-year student from the College of Arts and Science, shared his experience as it is his first time to contribute to the said event.

The PRC-SPCC and CRCY LSPU-SPCC encouraged everyone to participate on this kind of volunteerism by being a blood donor in the future blood donation drive.
