Tech Ad defends title, named Best Contingent Campus for the 7th time

echnology Advocate once again hailed as Best Contingent Campus Publication, bagging 14 gold, four silver and eight bronze medals in the 8thUniversitywide Press Conference held at Maria Paz Royale Garden Resort, San Pablo City, Nov. 16-18.

 With this year’s theme “Campus Journalism and the Digital Citizen: Upholding Ethics and Truth in Social Media,” Tech Ad spearheaded the annual LSPU Alliance of Campus Journalists (LACJ) three-day seminar-workshop of the four campus publications: The Gears (Sta. Cruz), Bay Breeze Group of Publications (Los Baños), The Baybay Granary (Siniloan) and the host campus, Technology Advocate (SPC).

 After reclaiming last year’s Best Contingent Campus Publication award, Tech Ad towered over other campuses to maintain the title based on the awards received by the ten delegates of each publication which was summed and ranked.

 From the publication came the two highest pointers, Editor-in-Chief Vanessa Belen, first and News and Sports Editor, Janella Masilungan, third.

 Other awards received by the Advocates were as follows: Belen: 1st Copyreading and Headline Writing (Filipino), 1st Developmental Communication (DevComm) Writing and 1st Editorial Writing (English); Alfredo Marasigan Jr: 1st Editorial Cartooning, 1st Sports Writing and 3rd Comic Stripping (English); Karla Sambajon: 1st News Writing, 2nd Sports Writing  (English) and 3rd Column Writing (Filipino); Masilungan: 1st News Writing, 1st Sports Writing (Filipino) and 2nd Copyreading and Headline Writing (English); Brian Daves Sanchez: 1st Column Writing, 3rd Editorial Writing (English) and 3rd Literary Writing (Filipino); Aera Joyce Ciar: 1st Literary Writing, 2nd Photojournalism and 3rd Feature Writing (English): Pauline Andrea Paran: 1st Photojournalism and 1stFeature Writing (Filipino); Daniel Balaaldia: 2nd Graphic Illustration (Filipino); Jhondel Mimay: 1st Comic Stripping and 3rd Graphic Illustration (Filipino); and Jonel Rever Biscocho: 3rd DevComm Writing (Filipino).

 “Itutuloy namin ’yung training para sa darating na Regionals at syempre Luzonwide, kung papalarin. Hindi dahil kami ang Best Contingent, magiging kampante na kami,” said Belen when asked about the publication’s future plans.

 Professional journalists were invited as resource speakers/judges in each category: Mark Angelo Mañez, sports columnist at InkDaily.ph; Lito Ballaran, visual artist; Julienne Urea, Freelance Internet Content Writer; Al Benavente, street and travel photographer; Eros Atalla, best-selling author; Manix Abrera, creator of the “Kiko Machine” comic strips published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer; Pauline Gidget Estella, Literature and Journalism instructor in the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB); and Joel Pablo Salud, Editor-in-Chief at Philippines Graphic.
