LSPU unveils Smart Bro Hangout Spot

The Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) officially launched its Smart Campus Hangout Spot at the Student Activity Center, LSPU-San Pablo City Campus (SPCC), Oct. 9.

The Smart Campus Hangout Spot of the LSPU-SPCC is the official entry of the university for the Smart Bro Hangout Spot Design Contest for colleges and universities nationwide hosted by Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart).

As explained by Mr. Aeron John Remorin, Officer-in-Charge (OIC) for the Supreme Student Council (SSC) of LSPU-SPCC, the Smart Campus Hangout Spot is a learning hub designed to provide students a safe and comfortable space for learning and recreation, equipped with free WiFi and charging station.

The LSPU entry for the contest was spearheaded by Dr. Alberto D. Castillo, Chairperson for the Office of the Student Affairs and Services (OSAS); Mr. Remorin and members of LSPU-SPCC SSC; Dr. Imelda Carada and Dr. Ma. Rona D. Sahagun, advisers of the LSPU-SPCC SCC; A/Prof. Eudora Tabo, faculty from the College of Industrial Technology (CIT); Dr. Jherwin P. Hermosa, faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS); and other officials and staff.

Supporting the establishment of the learning space were Dr. Mario R. Briones, University President; Dr. Eden C. Callo, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Michelle B. Sarmiento, Executive Assistant; A/Prof. Joel M. Bawica, Campus Director; and deans, associate deans, chairpersons, and faculty members.

Vice President Callo and Campus Director Bawica expressed their optimism for the establishment of the learning space and the partnership of LSPU and Smart Communications.

“The establishment of this hangout spot is very timely,” Dr. Callo said, appreciating the facility and the pleasant ambiance of the spot, all of which are aimed to “improve student experience, which is our goal.”

“We hope this partnership will push through and be sustainable,” said Campus Director Bawica. “Sana magtutuloy-tuloy lang tayo para maging matagumpay.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Sarmiento, former Director for OSAS, informed the officials, faculty, staff, and students present in the launching that the partnership of LSPU and Smart started in 2020 at the height of the pandemic. She said that the Smart Communications provided assistance to the LSPU students by providing free pocket WiFi which was distributed by the OSAS among students who needed internet connection for their uninterrupted learning.

Mr. Anthony Estagle, Area Development Manager of Smart, expressed the commitment of Smart to LSPU as one of the ardent supporters of the institution in connecting students and employees. Meanwhile, Mr. Ronald Garcia, Community Manager for Southern Luzon and NCR, shared his personal take on the entry of the LSPU, describing it as “one of the contenders.”

A ribbon cutting ceremony was conducted to formally open the hangout spot. Special numbers were also provided by the LSPU Choral and Kunday (dance group). Dr. Castillo officially closed the program, followed by photo opportunity among the participants.

The Smart Campus Hangout Spot is expected to run for more than six months upon its launching.
