Dr. Aurea A. Roxas gave a lecture on "Understanding Pests of Aerobic Rice and Determining Practices to Control Occurrence" during the second day of a three-day National Trainers' Training on Aerobic Rice Technology held on April 23-25, 2014 at the Asiablooms Hotel in Sta. Cruz, Laguna. She is an Accredited Researcher in Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority and a holder of a degree in Doctor of Philosophy in Entomology from the University of the Philippines in Los Baños, Laguna. She is a retired Professor of Central Luzon State University but according to her she is not yet tired.

Dr. Roxas discussed about the principle and objectives of pest management. According to her we must reduce loses from pests in ways that are most effective, economically sound, and ecologically compatible. In principle, there are four tenets of pest management. It must be i) part of the total crop production program, ii) economical, iii) understood that the pest control actions can result in undesirable effects such as water pollution and the destruction of the non-target species, and iv) in the broadest sense , pest management refers to all pests including weed, pathogens, insects, nematodes, and vertebrate animals.

She also showed the different types of insect pests and discussed how to manage them including the use of cultural and chemical control. Included also in her lecture are the different types of rice diseases and rice weeds, including its proper control management.

She emphasized that there are also beneficial insects and other arthropods present in the rice fields. They are the natural enemies of insects and pests that affect rice. Examples of which are beetles, crickets, and praying mantis among others.

Before the end of the lecture, several questions have been posted which were actively answered by Dr. Roxas. There are also some inputs that were provided by the participants that further liven the discussions.
